| Review: | The Canon EF 70-200mm f4.0 IS lens is very well build, as the "L" designation would lead you to suspect. Everything on this lens feels solid, from the all-metal outer barrel to the switches. Canon even included weather seals to keep dust and moisture out, a step up from it's non-IS sister.
The USM focus motor guarantees fast and silent focusing. Sharpness is very good, even at f4.0 this lens is sharp and does not improve a whole lot when stopping down. This is true across the whole zoom range, except at 20mm and at minimum focus distance. This is where my copy is worse. But from >2m focus distance this problem is non-extistant (MFD = 1.2m).
Even with a Kenko 1.4x extender, the image sharpness is excellent.
One could argue that this is the best lens Canon has ever made. I could not see much CA and distortion in the photo's I took with it. The bokeh is fine, the lens does not extend/retract when zooming and the front element does not rotate while focusing.
Edit: Just to add, the photo with the dog was taken with a Kenko Pro 300DG 1.4x extender. |
